ENERGY STAR®
LEED® for Homes
Federal Energy Tax Credits for Builders

NEC energy consultants provide builder education, on-site testing, and follow-up inspections to qualify new homes for ENERGY STAR® labeling. ENERGY STAR qualified homes are at least 15% more energy efficient than homes built to the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC).

Architects and home builders hire the NEC to participate in LEED® for Homes (LEED-H). "LEED," which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a voluntary initiative of the US Green Building Council to actively promote the transformation of the mainstream home building industry towards more sustainable practices. The NEC has three LEED-H staff consultants who work for the Alliance for Environmental Sustainability to provide inspections and support for builders seeking LEED-H certification.

The NEC certifies homes for federal energy-efficiency tax credits. Home builders can be eligible for a $2,000 tax credit—per structure—for building new energy-efficient homes that achieve 50 percent energy savings for heating and cooling over the 2004 International Energy Conservation Code.
